Where it earns its place is circadian disruption. Jet lag is the obvious case. Rotating onto night shifts is another. When your internal clock is pointed at the wrong hour, a small, well-timed dose can coax it back toward the local night, and for that narrow purpose melatonin sits among the few supplements with a reasonable evidence base behind it. A 2002 Cochrane review by Herxheimer and Petrie concluded that melatonin, taken near the destination bedtime, can reduce jet lag after flights crossing several time zones. If your only trouble is convincing your body that bedtime has actually arrived, melatonin may be the whole answer, and there's no shame in stopping here and trying it.

The limitation is what frustrates everyone. Melatonin helps set the start of the night, then clears your system fairly fast. It does not stand guard over the second half. A 2005 meta-analysis in the same journal (Brzezinski and colleagues) put the average reduction in time-to-fall-asleep at only a few minutes, which is real but modest, and says nothing about holding the back half of the night.
